Coming March 2010… GlideWear™ Anti-Shear Wheelchair Device
We have concluded the GlideWear™ market test, analyzed the results and are happy to report that this product received very high ratings from test participants. Most test participants found that it was very easy to use the GlideWear device on their cushion and it did not cause any problems with posture or stability. About 40% noticed improvements to the condition of their skin. While this market test was not a clinical study, the feedback we received indicates the potential of incorporating friction management into their “skin safety” program.
A few GlideWear Testers were uncertain about what GlideWear is for and how it works. People use cushions to address pressure – which if excessive can cause of skin breakdown. “Pressure” is easy to understand and it is even quite easy nowadays to measure sitting surface pressures (“pressure mapping”). But there is another skin damaging factor which is interrelated to pressure - yet not so intuitive; that is “shearing” caused by “friction”. The intent for GlideWear is to increase the users “margin of safety” by reducing the friction forces that cause damage to the skin in addition to the pressure reduction provided by the cushion – this is sort of a “One-Two punch”.
We would like to extend a hearty “thank you!” to all the participants who helped with this test!
